An Overview of Buddhist Meditation

"Oh house-builder, you are seen!..." — Dhammapada 154

The Buddha (born around 560 BC) attained spiritual awakening through investigating his own mind. He is not worshipped as a god — his realizations are presented as available to everyone. The core teaching is that suffering stems from misunderstanding one's true identity; meditation quiets the small, self-centered mind, revealing peace, lightness, joy, and understanding.

Meditation is a general term for quieting the mind. Buddhist meditation alone covers many schools and techniques, and can be practiced with or without a religious framing.
